Time Flies!

It’s been about six months since I’ve posted anything. I did say I’m not so good at this.


October, the last post about blackberry pie. Halloween occurred: Movie night around the few trick-or-treaters. Dinner: soup and salad. Old B horror movies, and murder/mystery. Late, sweet MIL’s (she was the best!) onion dip with Ruffles brand potato chips; candy, cookies, mixed nuts, pop… you get the idea. We flow with the sweet Halloween theme.

November: The US Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of the month. Traditional turkey, potatoes, gravy, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, apple pie…Cranberry sauce. Jelly like, or with the berries.

This year I was encouraged by my chef co-worker to try to cook a turkey. With her instruction, I did. It was easy. I just didn’t know it!

I have never been very good at cooking turkey so over the years when I’ve hosted, I’ve come up with variations: roasted Cornish game hens, turkey roulade, turkey pieces roasted separately. Going out for dinner…

Turned out wonderfully. There was some family strife and drama so it wasn’t the best Thanksgiving I’ve ever had, but I cooked a damned turkey — and I’d do it again!

December: Christmas Eve: hosted sister-in-law and family. Wasn’t our year but she had unexpected guests for Christmas Day. Crock-pot jambalaya. Not too bad for crock pot, although not great, and too spicy for the in-laws especially my nephew. Corn bread, don’t remember what for dessert —something with ice cream on top, or was it whipped cream…? Dessert is my specialty!

Christmas: All family present except my daughter-in-law. It was pretty low key.

Brunch as my parents did before us. My children insist on it, since I’m about as traditional as a Jello Pudding Cup served in a French restaurant.

Egg soufflé, sausage, bacon, Monkey bread, bacon, English muffins with jam or honey, bacon, hash browns, etc. We go through a LOT of bacon (and sausage) very quickly.

Cookies: Ginger Crackles; Polvorones/Butter Balls/Mexican Wedding Cakes/Russian Tea Cakes —whichever name by which you know those shortbread-like little nuggets; Noche Buena Sandwich Cookies…chocolate goodies, a touch of heat in the cookie sandwiched together with dulce de leche (yes I made my own—the easy way with sweetened condensed milk)

December 30/January 1: Movie night again: soup, salad, then snacks all night. This time a mystery, and some comedy.

My 9-year-old granddaughter was with us this year so my husband put in a few Little Rascals shorts. She enjoyed everything, mainly the music and the fashions depicted in the different black and white films. We had a range from 1929 to 1951. Go figure.

The other day she was listening to music from the 1930s. At home. On her iPad.

February: St. Valentine’s Day. Nothing noteworthy for Valentine’s Day. My husband was going to get this, I was going to get that, but we never seem to really get into it. I’m about as sentimental as a rodent. Actually, that’s not fair. I’m not sure if rodents are sentimental or not.

Well I did make strawberry cheesecake in little jars, and also a large cheesecake to test for my job. Wanted to get the strawberry sauce right, and the hearts on top.

Now it’s the end of April. Spring has sprung, at least in our area: unusually warm weather followed by rain, freeze, sun, rain, rain, rain…sunny days now, freezing at night. It’s definitely Spring.

We didn’t have a family Easter this year. No one really cares about it. My granddaughter will be with her dad for the week; the youngest grandson seemed less than interested last year, although with money in the plastic eggs at stake, he played along well.

I invited all for dinner this past Saturday, week after Easter. We had “melting potatoes” and Peruvian-style roasted chicken. Cumin, red pepper flakes, garlic, oil, brown sugar, salt, pepper…placed thin- sliced (lengthwise) chicken breast on an oiled sheet pan, added the combined ingredients and spread over chicken. Baked about 25 minutes with the potatoes after adding the chicken broth. Turned down the oven to 450°F/232°C —from 500 where the potatoes were baking—when I put in the chicken.

Chopped salad; some green sauce with garlic, jalapeños, lime juice, olive oil, salt, pepper, mayo. Supposed to have cilantro in it as well but I forgot to get it so I served as it was. Everyone loved it over the potatoes and chicken.

Chocolate cake with pastry cream filling and Swiss meringue buttercream; and raspberry cheesecake. Neither of which I remembered to take a pic of until they were demolished.

Well I did save a piece of each for the man. No one in my family can cut a cake or slice a cheesecake nicely.

It was delicious, and much prettier whole!
